Fr. Stanisław Planta SDS (1930-2013)

Fr. Stanisław Planta (religious name: Klemens) was born on April 20th 1930 in Rzozów near Skawina, Archdiocese of Kraków. He was the eldest son of Piotr and Zofia nee Kotula. From 1937 to 1944 he attended Elementary School in Rzozów-Radziszów. On June 18th 1944 he was accepted to the boarding school of the Salvatorians in Kraków, where he continued his education on Junior High School level.


On September 8th 1947 Stanisław Planta entered the Novitiate and began his formation at the religious community house in Bagno. He received his religious name: Klemens. He took his first vows on September 8th 1948 in Bagno. During the years 1948-1949 he lived at the religious house in Mikołów. Then he continued his religious formation and High School education in Kraków. On September 21st 1950 he passed the secondary school certificate exam in Kraków. Cl. Klemens Planta continued his intellectual formation by studying philosophy and theology at the Jagiellonian University, in Kraków. After suppression of the Theology Department by the communist government in 1954, Klemens continued and completed his studies with the Dominican Fathers. He made his perpetual religious profession on September 8th 1951 in Kraków. On April 3rd 1954, also in Kraków, he was ordained to the Deaconate by the Most Rev. Franciszek Jop. He was ordained to the Priesthood on December 8th 1954 in Kraków, by the Most Rev. Stanisław Rospond. Afterwards he lived at the religious community house in Kraków at Łobzowska Street # 22.

With the decree of his superiors, dated September 19th 1955, Fr. Stanisław Planta was transferred to Our Lady the Queen of Poland Parish in Bielsko-Biała, where he was a vicar and catechist during the years: 1955-1957. In 1957 he was sent to the nearby Parish of Our Lady the Queen of the World in Mikuszowice Śląskie, where until 1960, he engaged in pastoral ministry and catechetical work.

In 1960 Fr. Stanisław received permission from his religious superiors, to begin the studies in Roman Philology Department of the University of Warsaw, which he completed receiving Masters Degree. Therefore during the time period of 1960-1966 he lived in the religious community house at Olimpijska Street # 84 in Warsaw. During his studies, in 1963, Fr. Planta went to Paris to practice French language. With the decree, dated August 17th 1966, he was transferred to the religious house in Bagno, where he taught French and English as well as lectured Logic at the Salvatorian Major Seminary. Next year, with the decree from September 7th 1967, Provincial Superior Fr. Marek Piątkowski entrusted him the duties of spiritual director at the Seminary in Bagno. On September 17th 1988 Fr. Planta was appointed as confessor of Novices in Bagno. On March 10th 1969 he was released from his duties as spiritual director at the Seminary in Bagno. In 1970 he left the Salvatorian Society and entered secular state.

On July 10th 1988 he asked for readmission to the Society of the Divine Savior. On January 28th 1994 he was accepted. According to the agreement Fr. Stanisław Planta returned to the Polish Province of the Salvatorians and was appointed, on his own request, to missionary work in Tanzania.

He arrived in Africa on October 1st 1990 and after completing the Swahili language course, he lived at the Formation House in Namiungo, where he taught English the Novices and candidates. During the years 1994-1997 he was a vicar at St. Maurus Parish in Kurasini Dar es Salaam. Then, during the years 1997-2000 he was a Pastor in Chiungutwa, Diocese of Tunduru-Masasi. During the years 2000-2002 he worked in a parish in Nakapanya. Afterwards he was appointed as vicar in Lupaso, where he engaged in apostolate during the years: 2002-2006. In 2007 he was appointed as confessor of the Salvatorian Sisters in Migongo Masasi. However, two years later, because of health problems he had to move to Dar es Salaam. For a short period of time he still returned to his duties in Migongo Masasi, but soon he had to go back to Dar es Salaam for medical treatment. In 2013 he returned to Poland to continue the treatment.

Fr. Stanisław Planta passed away in the morning of September 1st 2013, at the Borromean Sisters’ Care Institute in Trzebnica. He went to Our Lord at the age of 83, in his 59th year of Priesthood and 41st year of religious life. His funeral took place on September 5th 2013, at 11 a.m. at the church of the Divine Savior in Kraków. He was buried at the Salvator Cemetery in the tomb of the Society.
