Fr. Jan Egidiusz Blokesz SDS (1928-2013)

Fr. Jan Egidiusz (religious name) Blokesz was born on February 8th 1928 in Radlin (Diocese of Katowice). In 1935 he began his elementary education in Obszary and completed it during the German occupation. Then he began his professional education in a trade school in Wodzisław.

In May of 1945 he entered the Junior High School in Mikołów. On September 7th 1948 he was accepted into the novitiate in Bagno and received his new name: Egidiusz. On September 8th 1949, Nativity of the BVM, he took his first religious vows. Then he returned to Mikołów in order to complete his education. In 1951-1956 he studied philosophy and theology at the Institute of Dominican Fathers in Cracow. On April 5th 1955 he was ordained to the deaconate by the Most Rev. Franciszek Jop. One year later, on October 24th 1956, Solemnity of John the Baptist, at the church of the Missionary Fathers in Stradom district of Cracow, he was ordained to the Priesthood by the Most Rev. Stanisław Rospond. The year following his ordinations was the so-called pastoral Year.

In 1957-1960 Fr. Jan worked as a parochial vicar and catechist in a school in the Mother of Our Savior Parish in Mikołów. From September 1st 1960 until August 1st 1961 he was a parochial vicar at St. Jacob the Apostle Parish in Człuchów (diocese of Gorzów). After brief stays in Bagno and Wrocław, his superiors sent him to the provincial house in Cracow at Łobzowska Street # 22, where for three years he was a treasurer.

On July 14th 1963 he began his ministry in a newly received parish in Krzyż Wielkopolski, where he was a pastor, superior and treasurer. He conducted the general repairs of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish and built a new rectory as well as a filial church in Drawiny. He also renovated other filial churches. In1972-1975 he was an extramural student of practical theology at the Catholic Academy of Theology in Warsaw. After receiving the Master of Theology degree he moved to Bagno on August 1st 1981, where he started works related with construction of the house for the alumni of the Salvatorian seminary. The building was consecrated on October 11th 1985.

On June 30th 1986 he moved to the religious house in Trzebnica, in order to take part in the pastoral ministry at St. Bartholomew the Apostole and St. Hedwig Parish and to provide assistance in other churches and chapels of the Parish. For twenty years he attended daily St. Isidorus chapel of the Borromean Sisters’ monastery in Małuszyn. For thirteen years he worked also in the filial church of the Body and Blood of Christ in Rzepatowice, where he conducted many important and necessary building projects. To the faithful attending the basilica of Trzebnica he was known most of all as a patient confessor.

Fr. Jan Blokesz passed away on his 85th birthday, on February 8th 2013, at the Care House of the Borromean Sisters in Trzebnica, where he resided since November 2012, requiring constant medical care. The funeral Mass was celebrated on February 11th at the International Sanctuary of St. Hedwig of Silesia. He was buried at the parish cemetery in Trzebnica.
